How Often Can I Be Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening

As you age, several factors can contribute to your teeth not being as white as they were when you were a child. Some of these include lifestyle choices such as drinking coffee or dark wine, eating foods that can stain teeth, smoking, or simply not brushing your teeth as often as you should. Taking certain medications and the normal aging process can also make your teeth take on more of a gray or yellow appearance as opposed to white.

Unfortunately, discolored teeth can make you feel so self-conscious that you hold back your smile. The good news is that this problem is easily fixable with professional teeth whitening.

What to Expect with Professional Teeth Whitening

Perhaps you have purchased an at-home teeth whitening kit from a drugstore in the past and felt disappointed with the results. If so, you should know that using a teeth whitening kit prescribed by your dentist is a completely different experience. First, we use professional-grade carbamide peroxide that reaches all levels of dentin in your teeth to draw out their natural whiteness. Our team will explain how to use the kit at home, including how much liquid to pour into the mouth trays, and how long to wear them.

The typical procedure takes 45 minutes to complete and can brighten the shade of your teeth by up to 10 times. A dental assistant will prevent the whitening gel from getting on your lips and gums by covering them. Once you have the customized trays with whitening gel in your mouth, our dentist will use a curing light to speed up the process of brightening your teeth. We work with both Opalescence and Zoom, a take-home whitening kit and an in-office procedure, depending on your preference.

How Often Can You Receive Professional Teeth Whitening?

The results of professional teeth whitening are instant and typically last between four and six months. Patients who love the results and their new bright smile often want to know how long to wait between sessions and whether it is safe to repeat more than once. In our experience, it is completely safe to come back for a touch-up or an entirely new procedure in the four to six-month window of time.

However, we recommend that you check the health of your tooth enamel before scheduling the next appointment. This is an important part of dental health and wellness because sensitive teeth can respond poorly to the whitening products and make the enamel of your teeth too thin. You will know that your tooth enamel is too thin if you can see through any of your teeth or your gums appear damaged in any way.

It is also a good idea to avoid professional teeth whitening if you are pregnant, have a known allergy to hydrogen peroxide or carbamide, or are under 16 years old. Our staff will always be honest and let you know if you appear to be a good candidate for this popular cosmetic dentistry procedure or not.
